Tour Operators in South Africa sell tour packages to local and overseas travel agents then in return sell it to tourists. A complete tour plan, including the places to be visited and accommodation is worked out beforehand.

Tour Operators employ registered Tour Guides to accompany and guide tourists. They are trained in guiding techniques and have a thorough knowledge of the area where they accompany groups for example the Kruger National Park or Cape Town.

Tour Guides meet tourists when they arrive. If it is an overseas group, the Tour Guide will give them some information about the country. He or she will discuss matters such as security, the South African currency, languages, which water is safe to drink, tipping etc.

The Tour Guide will study the itinerary carefully and ensures that it is strictly adhered to. As the tour progresses he or she will give tourists information about the places they visit.
