The high crime rate in South Africa has forced most companies and institutions to employ the services of Professional Security Personnel to protect personnel, property and information. An organisation can establish its own in-house security force, or it can use security services, rendered by private security companies. All private security personnel have to be accredited by the Security Officers Board. This regulatory body determines training and service standards for the industry.
Security Officers can specialise into a number of fields. These include access control (often with the assistance of sophisticated X-ray or electronic camera equipment), Banking Security, Airport Security, Commercial Security or the protection of assets such as money in transit. Most security companies offer a control room service, which monitors alarms. Specially trained reaction personnel investigate alarms that are activated.
