Metal Workers, which include Boilermakers and platers, construct, maintain and repair structures of steel, plate and piping. These structures are normally found in manufacturing plants, power stations and mines or even on oil drill platforms.

Building these structures of steel involves a great deal of detailed work from the Metal Worker. They work according to specification given to them in the form of plans. Once the Metal Worker has studied the plans, he prepares and marks out the material to specification. The Metal Worker then cuts the metal to the right dimensions. The metal is then straightened, bent or rolled to the required angles and curves used to manipulate the steel into the required forms.

The Metal Work then assembles to components by welding together. Welding requires a lot of skill from the Metal Worker as incorrect welding procedures can cause damage to the steel.
