Hairdressers render a service to their clients by washing, cutting, perming, colouring, straightening or styling their hair.

Hairdressers study the clients face, hair and scalp. They determine whether hair is thick and heavy or whether it is thin and needs more body or a perm. A good Hairdresser is creative within an artistic temperament. He or She may make some suggestions regarding the best suitable style and colour for the client. When a change of colour is desired, the hair is tinted and highlighted. The hair is cut to the agreed length and form, curled, or pleated and dyed. When hair is short and curly, the Hairdresser will straighten it upon request. Long hair is then blow-waved and combed to create a specific style or look.

Hairdressers are often consulted about the treatment of hair and scalp problems. It is essential that they have a sound knowledge of common diseases or problems affecting the hair or scalp. Hairdressers must be aware about the latest hair care products on the market.
