First Aid Workers normally work for organisations such as the Red Cross or St. Johns Ambulance. They are trained to react fast and efficiently in any emergency situation.
First Aid Workers will administer basic first aid to those in need before they are transported to a hospital. Time is often a matter of life and death. In the case of a heart attack for example the heart has to be resuscitated within 6 minutes to save the patient’s life. This is often not enough to get a person to a hospital for emergency treatment. The patient thus has to rely on the first aid treatment administered by the First Aid Worker. Treatment can also involve less serious cases such as people who have fainted, minor cuts and abrasions or even people suffering from muscle cramps as a result of exhaustion.
Red Cross and St. Johns Ambulance First Aid Workers also administer first aid at sports field and large public gatherings.
