The work of the Fireman varies a great deal because every emergency situation differs from the previous one. As the preservation of life is the first priority, the Fireman is summoned to all situations where lives are in danger. They save people from fire emergencies, motor wrecks, mountains or other inhospitable areas. Special methods and techniques are employed to save trapped or injured people. Firemen use the so-called Jaws of Life to cut trapped people from car wrecks. Ropes and helicopters are used to rescue people from mountains.

In order to extinguish fires, the Fireman uses a variety of vehicles and equipment such as water, dry powder and foam extinguishers to put out the different types of fire. Other duties include site inspections and recommendations with regards to fixed fire-fighting installations such as smoke detectors, sprinkles and emergency exits.
