Civil Engineers are required to have an engineering degree and need to be registered aa professional engineers with the statutory body regulating the professions before they are allowed to practice in South Africa.
Civil Engineers are concerned with projects such as construction of roads, bridges, dams, power plants, shopping centres and manufacturing plants. They are responsible for the design, construction and project management of these projects and ensure that construction work according to time schedules, quality requirements and within the budget. They also ensure that all construction work adhere to prescribed safety regulations.
Civil Engineers manage subcontractors on behalf of the client to ensure that all work is done according to engineering specifications and regularly liaise with and provide progress reports to the constructing client. They are also responsible for financial management of projects and determine payment mileposts accordingly. Civil Engineers use advanced computer software tools such as design and project management software programmes to assists them conceptualising, designing and managing construction projects.
