Chefs are responsible for the planning, preparation and presentation of food in hotels, guest houses and restaurants. They are key figures in the hospitality industry and cater for guests with a wide variety of tastes. They are aware of their guest’s dietary preferences and tastes and often health food options when appropriate.

Chefs are normally responsible for menu planning, costing ordering and stock control. They work in kitchens and use kitchen utensils to prepare diches, offered to clients in a buffet or a la carte format. Duties may differ according to the nature and size of the restaurant, hotel or catering operation. The Chef’s task may, for example, vary from preparing traditional French dishes to take-away food. Chefs sometimes specialise in the preparation of certain types of food such as Italian or traditional African Food.
