When receiving an emergency call, the ambulance station dispatches an ambulance to assist the injured. The Basic Ambulance Assistant assists the Ambulance Emergency Assistant and the Critical Care Assistant to make an assessment of scene and determine the medical emergency need of the patients. The Ambulance Emergency Assistant and the Critical Care Assistant will provide basic or advanced life support treatment such as the stanching of blood. The Basic Ambulance Assistant will help the rest of medical emergency team to stabilise the patients and treat them for shock, fractures and wound. Specialised equipment and rescue tools are often used to free a person from wreckage.
After emergency treatment, the patients are transported by ambulance to the nearest suitable hospital for further medical care. Ambulance crew are normally all trained and licenced to drive an ambulance. They are also trained to assist patients in helicopter ambulances.
