For the majority of people in South Africa has become the primary source of entertainment, information and education. Television Directors are responsible for compiling high quality programmes from conceptualisation to broadcast.
The work of the director of television programmes will differ according to the genre that he or she works on. Television genres include news, documentary, sport, drama, music, educational and religious programmes.
The television Journalist for example normally directs short, less than one minute, news inserts. These inserts are shot on a single camera. He or she will supervise the scripting and editing and will have the insert ready for broadcast in the shortest possible time.
A drama Director on the other hand will take anything from six to twelve months to produce a drama series. The director will be involved in refining the scripts, casting of actors, scouting of locations, production planning, shooting, editing and final mix. He or she has to work within a given budget.
