When Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, he could not foresee how this invention would eventually change our world. Our business and social lives today evolve around the telephone. Telephone Operators assist us to get the maximum benefit from this handy instrument.
All business and government institutions have switchboards where Telephone Operators handle incoming calls. Many businesses have telephone systems that enable direct dialing to individuals in the business. It is necessary however to have a Telephone Operator to take calls if the person is not available or if the caller has any other enquiries.
Telephone Operators working at switchboards or exchanges also assist callers with calls that cannot be made directly, such as international, person-to-person or collect calls.
Telephone Operators also man emergency centres where they receive emergency calls from for example from SOS telephones.
