The sign-writer designs and paints lettering and artwork on windows, signboards, cars, the walls of buildings and advertising boards.

 Once the sign-writer has received the detailed job descriptions, he or she prepares a rough sketch of the design. This will entail choosing an appropriate style of lettering and a good design in terms of visual appeal, spacing and layout. When designing signboard or advertisement for a company, the sign-writer must take cognisance of corporate specifications such as colour, typeface and the use of company logos.

 Once the design is completed and approved by the client, the sign-writer will prepare the surface and mark the height and position of the artwork and lettering with chalk.
