In the fast moving modern business world of today, the efficient operation of offices depend largely on the skills of qualified and able secretaries. They perform a variety of administrative duties mostly in support of management senior staff. They schedule appointment, use emails to communicate with people inside and outside the company, maintain the filing system, type reports and other documents, receive visitors and answer and make telephone calls. The secretary deals with clients on a daily basis and needs to have good interpersonal and telephone communication skills. In addition, they must be well organised, systematic, accurate and computer literate.

Secretaries work with modern office equipment such as computers, printers and copiers to provide information needed by management and other staff. They often act as personal assistants to senior managers. In such cases the Secretary will manage the manager’s diary, arrange his daily schedule and assist with preparations for meeting etc. They must be presentable and able to liaise with people at top management level. Some secretaries, such as medical and legal secretaries, do highly specialised work.
