Radiographer apply X-rays and radio–active substances to patients for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The nature of the work differs according the Radiographer’s field of specialisation. A radiographer working for dentist will for instance apply X-rays to locate possible problems with a patient’s teeth while a Radiographer working for a Cardiologist or Heart Doctor will specialise in taking X-rays of a patient’s heart. Other Radiographers may administer chemotherapy to cancer patients.
There are four fields of specialisation in radiography.
Diagnostic Radiographers Capture X-ray images of the human body on the film or other media to locate or confirm medical problems.
Therapeutic Radiographers localise, plan and administer radiation treatment for cancer patients.
Nuclear Medicine radiographers use radioactive medicine to capture diagnostic images of the patient while.
Ultrasound Radiographer produce images of the human body by using equipment which generates high frequency sound waves.
Radiographers may be involved in administration, personnel management and training.
