Publishers finance the production costs of fictional and non-fictional books. They pay Authors a royalty fee based on the number of books sold. Publishers have to be in touch with the reading preferences of the market, in order to ensure that all books published are viable business propositions.

The Publisher works closely with the Editor of each book. He or she is involved in the production process of each book- from manuscript stage to the final stage when the book arrives for checking. The Publisher manages the publishing team in such a manner that only high quality books are published. The duties of the Publisher may include the reading of manuscripts, liaison with the marketing department of the publishing house or book store, suggesting new ideas for books and contributing to the planning of the overall publishing profile of the company. In South Africa we find general Publishers and those who specialise in markets, such as fictional, non-fictional or educational books.
