Millions of letters and parcels are posted daily in South Africa. This large volume of the post is destined for addresses across South Africa and abroad. It is the responsibility of the South African Post Office to receive, sort and deliver these postal items undamaged to the right addresses on time. To handle this massive task, the Post Office employs thousands of people. One of the important links in this service chain is the Postman and women.

Postman and women deliver letters and other small postal items along a designated route. Before departure from the postal depot they collect the mail for the route and arrange it in street and house number order. They then start the delivery from a fixed point. Postal deliveries are done on foot, with a bicycle or with a motor cycle.

Apart from delivering mail, Postman and women also perform other tasks such as the collection and date stamping of postal items. Some of them also perform driving duties when mail is conveyed and from postal depots and airports.
