Optical dispensers interpret and analyse prescriptions received from Ophthalmologists or Optometrists. They decide which type of lens will be the most suitable to the patient’s lifestyle. Some patients may want to have high index, but also lenses that darken in sunlight. Their main concern could be safety or cosmetic benefits. A sportsman or typist may also have totally different requirements regarding a frame. Optical Dispensers must make spectacles that fit comfortable and enhance patient’s appearances.

Optical Dispensers working in optical laboratories must ensure that lenses are made according to the minimum SABS specifications. When they have ascertained, by means of instrumentations, that the lenses are correct and fit into the frame, they dispense the spectacles to patients.
