A Millwright is a craftsman or tradesman engaged with the construction and maintenance of machinery. Modern Millwrights work with steel and other materials and must often combine the skills of several skilled trades in order to successfully fabricate industrial machinery or to assemble machines from the pre-fabricated parts. They often machine parts together with bolts, rivets, and welds.

Some Millwrights use metalworking equipment such as lathes and grinders to custom make parts. This is particularly relevant in the tooling manufacturing industry where Millwrights create tools, dies and moulds for machines used by the manufacturers to produce goods.

Modern Millwrights must also be able to read blueprints and other schematics to aid them in the construction of complex systems. Many new machines are now installed with robots and computer controls. Millwrights may programme these controls or work with numerical control tool programmers.
