The duties of Medical Doctors include the examination of patients, diagnosis of aliments and the prescription of medicine. They also perform operations and treat injuries. A thorough knowledge of diseases and their symptoms are required for diagnosis and treatment. Medical Doctors first compile a clinical history of the patient before making a diagnosis. They use different examining technique and diagnostic equipment such as X-rays to form an image of the disease or injury. It is important that all factors are taken into account when a diagnosis is made and treatment is prescribed.

General Practitioners sometimes find it necessary to refer patients to Medical Specialists for specialised treatment. These specialists include surgeons who performs operations, Paediatricians who specialise in children’s ailments and Gynaecologists who focus on women’s health.

Medical Doctors are also responsible for promoting healthy communities. They act as role models, educate people and promote community development and a healthy lifestyle.
