Insurance Consultants market insurance policies on behalf of insurance companies to individuals, to provide in their needs for life cover, savings or pension.

Insurance Consultants are trained to make a thorough analysis of each prospective client’s financial needs. He or she then recommends a specific policy or insurance plan to suit the needs of a specific client. The individual’s financial needs may change over time or new products may appear on the market. The Insurance Consultant therefore does follow-ups to keep his or her client’s insurance portfolios up to date. Insurance Consultants may operate as independent brokers. They then market policies of more than one insurance company. Alternatively, a specific company can employ them.

In contrast with long term insurance, which focuses on life coverage and long term financial planning, there is also short-term assurance, which covers policy holders against the risk of short term material losses such as car accidents, burglaries, etc. Short term policies are also marketed by trained consultants.
