Forensic science technicians analyse and study physical evidence with the assistance of sophisticated laboratory equipment in order to solve crimes. Forensic science has benefited greatly from advancements in technology, such as DNA tying and polygraph or lie detector tests. DNA provides a genetic map that is unique for every individual human being. Evidence is collected by crime scene investigators and brought to the crime laboratory.
Physical evidence can be a weapon, a piece of clothing, a bloodstain, or drugs. Forensic science technicians examine, analyse and interpret the evidence to link a suspect to the crime. They often confer with experts and might, for example, consult a technician who specialises in DNA typing. Forensic science technicians prepare reports of their findings. Their records have to be detailed and correct as it normally serves as evidence in court.
