In an arid country like South Africa where farming conditions are mostly tough, farming practices have to be scientific and well managed to minimise risks and ensure optimum rewards. Farmers have to be constantly aware of new developments and scientific breakthroughs regarding livestock breeding, the cultivation of grain, pest and disease control etc. Many farmers in South Africa, especially small-scale farmers, are not properly trained or do not have easy access to information regarding modern agricultural practices.
These Farmers have to rely on the knowledge and guidance of Agricultural Extension officers. These officers are highly trained and experienced and are employed by the Department of Agriculture, cooperatives and agricultural companies such as the manufacturers of fertilizers. Agricultural Extension Officers visit Farmers on their farms to advise them on modern and healthy farming practices. They discuss problem areas and assists Farmers to overcome problems related to the choice of seed, fertilisation, pest control, animal diseases etc. Agricultural Extension Officers are often involved in research on experimental farms. They test new seed cultivars or cattle breeds for adaptability, production etc.
