Catering companies supply meals on a contract basis to businesses and other organisations. Service range from the supply of exquisite meals at glittering gala functions to the daily supply of meals to workers in business canteens. The Caterer is responsible for menu planning, the standardisation of recipes and the coordination of functions. He or she exercises quality control over the whole process of food supply, storage, preparation and service. The catering industry is subject to strict health regulations and the Caterer must ensure that the catering business adheres to these regulations at all times.
The Caterer is also responsible for financial management and administration such as budgets, stock taking and purchases of food and equipment. Another important responsibility of the Caterer is staff management. The caterer appoints and managers staff such as kitchen staff, wine stewards and waiters.
